Chinees Medisch Centrum, the clinic of Dr. Shien Wang, has been in Amsterdam for fifteen years. How many Dutchmen has he treated in all those years? "Pooh," he scratches his head. “Thousands,” he replies with a laugh.

Unfamiliar territory

When Dr. Wang started a practice a few decades ago, his healing method was unknown territory for many Dutch people. He treats chronic complaints and disorders with acupuncture and herbs. First in Amsterdam and later in St. Gallen, Switzerland, “It was word of mouth. Patients I had successfully treated continued to spread the word. In this way, my clinic slowly filled up.”

 

“Many people only treat what bothers them. For example, do you have a headache? Then you take a paracetamol. Do you suffer from hay fever? Then you use eye drops. But that way you only fight the symptoms." With Dr. Wang's treatment method, the problem is tackled at the root.

Of those thousands of patients, many regularly fall into his arms with relief, he says. “I think that's the best thing, that I can help people in this way.” Perhaps a little less visible through the mouth cap, but Wang's face radiates when he talks about his work.
